One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two teens—both named Will Grayson—are about to cross paths. As their worlds collide and intertwine, the Will Graysons find their lives going in new and unexpected directions, building toward romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most fabulous high school musical. – Goodreads

I was a little worried when I started Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I’ve read Looking for Alaska by John Green and I loved it. But I was really worried about how they were going to pull off having two main characters with the same name. I was worried it would get confused and I wouldn’t know which one was speaking and etc.

Honestly? It wasn’t a problem at all. Mainly because the stylistic differences in the writing/printing of the book, but also because of the two vastly different lives the two Will Grayson’s led.

In the end, I didn’t have a favourite Will Grayson. At first I really liked the first one better. He was funny and witty, whereas the second one was too depressing and angry all the time. But! Like all good characters, both Will Graysons evolved and grew up as the story progressed, and in the end, I liked both Will Grayson’s equally. But Tiny Cooper….he was just epic. Even just his NAME is epic. Definitely my favourite character. He was hilarious and so himself throughout the whole book, and even though he too grew up, he really did remain the same person.

Writing wise, I thought the stylistic choices of both authors fit the characters very well. I think John Green wrote for the first Will Grayson and David Levithan wrote for the second, but I could be totally wrong and I don’t want to make any real assumptions. Either way, the way each Will Grayson’s story was told seemed to really fit their personality. I liked that a lot.

Story-wise, I enjoyed it a lot. All the characters were so real and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone wasn’t like, “yeah, this story happened to me!” despite the serious improbability of running into someone with the exact same name as you.

The ending was definitely not enough closure for me, although I am definitely one of those people who needs to be told exactly what happens to the character after the story ends, so the not-enough-closure thing is probably only me.

Anyway, if you’ve read a John Green and/or David Levithan book before, or even if you haven’t, I definitely recommend reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson. It was absolutely hilarious, but also serious at the same time. The first few pages are so funny that my boyfriend even wants to read it, if that helps to alleviate any doubts you may have.

  1. Great review! I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book and can’t wait to read it myself.

btw, if you don’t mind me saying, the blogger book awards – Independent Literary Awards – have a category for GLBTQ books and I’m on the panel. This book is eligible. If you loved it, would you consider nominating it or any other GLBTQ book published in 2010 that you may have read this year? :D http://indielitawards.wordpress.com/glbtq/
