Going Abroad

Edinburgh, Scotland study abroad><br />
(you can view all of my study abroad pictures <a href=here)

I spent the first half of 2011 studying abroad, living in London, taking classes, traveling, exploring the city, eating, meeting fun British people, going to museums, eating, seeing plays, traveling, etc. It was basically the greatest experience of my life.

And I am so lucky because not every one gets to do that. And yet, somedays I am SO nostalgic and sad and I want to go back and it hurts so bad when I think about walking along the Seine and the Paris cobblestone that made my feet bleed and I literally need to go back. Luckily, I kind of can. And you can too!

You can go abroad THROUGH BOOKS.

I’m super sorry if you though I was giving away a trip to Europe or something. DUDE, I WISH. Who wants to sponsor that giveaway!?

But legit, books where the protagonist goes to Europe or some other far away foreign lands are my JAM. Some of my favourite books involve characters leaving home for the first time and exploring new places and meeting new people.

So I’ve made a list of some AWESOME books featuring foreign places – plus a handful of movies – that you guys need to check out.

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard

First Line (list excluded): As soon as I see the blonde girl bouncing down the aisle, I know she’s headed for the empty seat next to me.

Where in the World: Central America (including Guatemala)

Summary: It all begins with a stupid question:

Are you a Global Vagabond?

No, but 18-year-old Bria Sandoval wants to be. In a quest for independence, her neglected art, and no-strings-attached hookups, she signs up for a guided tour of Central America—the wrong one. Middle-aged tourists with fanny packs are hardly the key to self-rediscovery. When Bria meets Rowan, devoted backpacker and dive instructor, and his outspokenly humanitarian sister Starling, she seizes the chance to ditch her group and join them off the beaten path.

Bria’s a good girl trying to go bad. Rowan’s a bad boy trying to stay good. As they travel across a panorama of Mayan villages, remote Belizean islands, and hostels plagued with jungle beasties, they discover what they’ve got in common: both seek to leave behind the old versions of themselves. And the secret to escaping the past, Rowan’s found, is to keep moving forward.

But Bria comes to realize she can’t run forever, no matter what Rowan says. If she ever wants the courage to fall for someone worthwhile, she has to start looking back.

First Line: No one knows for certain when the trouble started at the Colgan School.

Where in the World: Europe (including London and Paris)

Summary: When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her on a trip to the Louvre…to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie traveled to Austria…to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own—scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. Unfortunately, leaving “the life” for a normal life proves harder than she’d expected.

Soon, Kat’s friend and former co-conspirator, Hale, appears out of nowhere to bring Kat back into the world she tried so hard to escape. But he has a good reason: a powerful mobster has been robbed of his priceless art collection and wants to retrieve it. Only a master thief could have pulled this job, and Kat’s father isn’t just on the suspect list, he is the list. Caught between Interpol and a far more deadly enemy, Kat’s dad needs her help.

For Kat, there is only one solution: track down the paintings and steal them back. So what if it’s a spectacularly impossible job? She’s got two weeks, a teenage crew, and hopefully just enough talent to pull off the biggest heist in her family’s history–and, with any luck, steal her life back along the way.

Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter

First Line: Moscow can be a cold, hard place in winter.

Where in the World: Europe and Russia (including Moscow and France)

That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners.

There are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, no one who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed.

Kat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. After all she has her best friend—the gorgeous Hale—and the rest of her crew with her as they chase the Cleopatra around the globe, dodging curses, realizing that the same tricks and cons her family has used for centuries are useless this time.

Which means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules.

After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts . . . from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to break a few rules along the way. However, at the cloisters all is not what it seems. Outside, the unicorns wait to attack.
