In an alternate London where magical creatures are preserved in a museum, two teens find themselves caught in a web of intrigue, deception, and danger.

Vespa Nyx wants nothing more than to spend the rest of her life cataloging Unnatural creatures in her father’s museum, but as she gets older, the requirement to become a lady and find a husband is looming large. Syrus Reed’s Tinker family has always served and revered the Unnaturals from afar, but when his family is captured to be refinery slaves, he finds that his fate may be bound up with Vespa’s—and with the Unnaturals.

As the danger grows, Vespa and Syrus find themselves in a tightening web of deception and intrigue. At stake may be the fate of New London—and the world – Goodreads

The Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent is one of those books where I am just in awe of the creativity and world building that went into it. The story had a bit of everything – witches, museums, elemental beings, tinkers, ladies of high society – even a sphinx!

I was captured by all the ins and outs of New London and the history Tiffany Trent created. At first The Unnaturalists was almost a bit overwhelming because we’re introduced to all these new creatures and facts right off the bat, without any preamble. But I kind of just rolled with it and was just sucked in to this extremely visual world Tiffany Trent built for me.

I love protagonists with goals, with dreams and aspirations, so Vespa was a great character to me. She didn’t want to be the girl who just accepts her fate of marriage being her whole life – she wanted to work in a museum like her father and I loved that aspect of her personality.

Syrus was an interesting character as well – his family was more interesting to me than Vespa’s because they had such an interesting backstory, and then I really felt for him after a tragic event in the beginning of The Unnaturalists.

I loved the POV shifts between the chapters. I couldn’t decide who I was more interested in learning about – Vespa or Syrus, so it was cool that I didn’t really have to choose. I got to read the story from both perspectives and see how the stories intertwined.

The Unnaturalists was a great mix of steampunk and fantasy – and if you like either, don’t miss The Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent. The world she builds is astounding with strong characters and an intriguing storyline.

  3. I’ve had my eyes on this one because I love steampunk and fantasy plus this cover is awesome. So pretty. I’m nervous about it being a London book because the Brit-speak is something I always have trouble with for some reason (I had a tough time with Burn Mark). But I like that you liked it. I haven’t seen any other reviews of it.

  5. I don’t think I’ve ever read ANYTHING steampunk. Wait. Does the Iron Fey series count? I don’t even know what steampunk is. But I love this cover and it looks SO GOOD.
