Be careful what you search for…

Emma Guthrie expects this summer to be like any other in the South Carolina Lowcountry–hot and steamy with plenty of beach time alongside her best friend and secret crush, Cooper Beaumont, and Emma’s ever-present twin brother, Jack. But then a mysterious eighteenth-century message in a bottle surfaces, revealing a hidden pirate bounty. Lured by the adventure, the trio discovers the treasure and unwittingly unleashes an ancient Gullah curse that attacks Jack with the wicked flesh-eating Creep and promises to steal Cooper’s soul on his approaching sixteenth birthday.

When a strange girl appears, bent on revenge; demon dogs become a threat; and Jack turns into a walking skeleton; Emma has no choice but to learn hoodoo magic to undo the hex, all before summer – and her friends — are lost forever.

Lea Nolan, author of Conjure

Thanks so much for having me here, Tara. It’s a great pleasure to visit The Hobbitsies!

1) Who was the third person you told about your book deal and how did they react?

After my husband and best friend, I’m pretty sure I wrote a group email to a bunch of my writing sisters. As you can guess it was a bubbly, excited missive full of exclamation points and smiley faces. Their responses contained more of the same!

2) If you could be the author of any already published work, which would it be and why?

I’d say Harry Potter because it’s just about perfect but that would be super presumptuous and arrogant…so I’ll pick something else instead. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is one of my favorite YA books. Not only is it beautifully written but it is so poignant and profound it makes my heart hurt.

3) What draws you to the paranormal? Do you ever see yourself writing in another genre?

I love the infinite possibilities in paranormal fiction. So long as you build your world convincingly, there are no limits and anything goes. Most of my ideas are rooted in the paranormal or fantasy realms but I do have at least one contemporary YA story I’d like to write because the subject means a lot to me personally and would have spoken to me as a teen. So, I think the best answer is that I’d write in another genre if I thought I’d have something important to say.

4) Let’s say Cooper Beaumont is a dog. What kind of dog would he be?

Oh, he’d definitely be a golden retriever. With his golden brown hair, fierce loyalty, loving nature and penchant of jumping in the water at the beach, he’d be the ideal golden! But of course, he’d have to be a really muscular and good looking one! ;)

5) Do you have any tidbits about future projects you’re working on that you can share with us?

I’m currently working on Conjure’s sequel Allure. The plot gets darker and more twisty which is really fun to explore. If you liked the flesh-eating curse and demon dogs in Conjure, you’re going to love what comes next!

Thanks again for hosting me! This was a lot of fun!
