ARC from PublisherAn exotic treat set in an entirely original, fantastical world brimming with deadly mystery, forbidden romance, and heart-stopping adventure.
Nisha was abandoned at the gates of the City of a Thousand Dolls when she was just a child. Now sixteen, she lives on the grounds of the isolated estate, where orphan girls apprentice as musicians, healers, courtesans, and, if the rumors are true, assassins. Nisha makes her way as Matron’s assistant, her closest companions the mysterious cats that trail her shadow. Only when she begins a forbidden flirtation with the city’s handsome young courier does she let herself imagine a life outside the walls. Until one by one, girls around her start to die.
Before she becomes the next victim, Nisha decides to uncover the secrets that surround the girls’ deaths. But by getting involved, Nisha jeopardizes not only her own future in the City of a Thousand Dolls—but her own life. – Goodreads
Within minutes of picking up City of a Thousand Dolls by Miriam Forster, I knew I was going to love it. A lot of elements came together and just made City of a Thousand Dolls a ME book.
First of all, City of a Thousand Dolls a fantasy story with dystopian elements and mystery and intrigue and murder and backstabbing and scandal and what not. Oh, and the protagonist can talk to cats. Yeah, I know, that is freaking awesome.
I loved Nisha as a protagonist – and not just because of her particular cat affinity. I loved Nisha because she fought for what she believed in and she stood up for herself. She didn’t roll over and let people step all over her just because she wasn’t really a high-ranking member of society. She brave and I just found her to be a really admirable protagonist. And she totally had her faults, too! She was kind of stubborn and didn’t always think things through before rushing into them, which got her into trouble.
I loved the storyline in City of a Thousand Dolls. Love, love, loved it. There were major plot twists I never, ever, ever saw coming that had me going HOLY SHIT at my book.
The idea of the city was awesome and the way Miriam Forster built up this world with the history and the different houses and duties and castes. Miriam Forster is basically a master world-builder and I absolutely need to see more in the world of City of a Thousand Dolls.
As soon as I get a finished copy of The City of a Thousand Dolls in my hands, it is going straight to my favourites shelf. I can’t wait to see more from Miriam Forster – she wrote an excellent debut and I can’t wait to read more of the worlds she creates.

OF COURSE. You make this book sound like the most AWESOMEST THING EVER BELOW THE TROPOSPHERE and I am left SUFFERING. One day, Tara, you’ll make this too hard for me. As it is you’re talking about one of my most HIGHLY anticipated titles this year. What am I expected to about myself now knowing all this?

Your review won me over. I was a bit hesitant having heard of it elsewhere because I’m getting a bit tired of the assassin girl theme (Throne of Glass, Graceling, etc.) but I will try this one! I’m always up for some awesome world building.

Sounds interesting! Adding it to my to read list, I’m also quite intrigued because the release date is my birthday haha :) Love how the main character is an assassin, never read a book with a protagonist who is that.

Yay I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed City of a Thousand Dolls. It’s on my TBR list, especially since it’s a debut and standalone and high fantasy. I do enjoy my strong female protagonists, and even more so in fantasy worlds. Can’t wait to read it!
