Rae’s always dreamed of dating a guy like Nathan. He’s nothing like her abusive stepfather—in other words, he’s sweet. But the closer they get, the more Nathan wants of her time, of her love, of her…and the less she wants to give.

As Rae’s affection for Nathan turns to fear, she leans on her friend Leo for support. With Leo, she feels lighter, happier. And possessive Nathan becomes jealous.

Then a tragedy lands Rae in the ICU. Now, hovering between life and death, Rae must find the light amid the darkness…and the strength to fight for life and the love she deserves. – Goodreads

I am on a roll with my 2013 reads so far. Falling For You by Lisa Schroeder is an absolutely stunning, emotional, heart-wrenching, and hopeful contemporary.

The writing style blew me away. I haven’t read any of Lisa Schroeder’s novels-in-verse yet – although I’ve heard great thing. But I loved the combination of prose and poetry. It was seriously well-written – sometimes I think poetry in the middle of a story told in prose is awkward and I have definitely skipped over it before. But I thought the poetry in Falling For You did an amazing job at telling the story in a beautiful and visual way.

And the story itself – my heart broke for Rae. She could not catch a break, I swear. I thought Falling For You was an excellent portrayal of dysfunctional families and the obstacles that many teenagers face. Not to mention Rae’s relationship with Nathan and even her relationship with Leo. But I absolutely loved the character growth and I really admired Rae for all the obstacles she had to overcome.

I also loved the focus on the anonymity of poetry. It’s such a relevant topic, I think –whether or not teenagers can share real emotions with each other through poetry and stamp their name on it without being bullied.

If you’re looking for an amazing contemporary, I highly recommend Falling For You by Lisa Schroeder. It’s not an easy story to read by any means – Falling For You deals with a lot of tough issues. But I think it’s an important story to read, one that is moving and hopeful and heart-wrenching.

  2. Falling for You is my second Lisa Schroeder book, after The Day Before. I love that it’s a departure from The Day Before but you can also tell they are by the same author. Clever way of including poetry and like you said making the message so relevant to today’s teens.

Great review, so glad you enjoyed Falling For You too. Hope you check out The Day Before sometime! (And I guess my new year’s resolution is to catch up on Lisa’s other books)

  3. January is jam-packed with SO MANY MUST HAVES. And this is one of them for me. I’ve been hearing about Lisa’s verse novels as much as the next susceptible listener, so I’m all excited and buzzed and pumped for this book. BECAUSE I DON’T DO VERSE. Can’t help it. It’s a thing. And now I get to see what all the hoopla is about! :D

  5. This book is intriguing, mostly because I want to find out what Rae ends up doing in the face of this.. posessiveness that Nathan seems to be showing. It sounds like it would be incredibly emotional to read!
