Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations.

Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She’ll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school’s security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case . . . all while trying not to blow her cover. – Goodreads

Finally! I have read a Robin Benway book. Also Known As is hilarious, fun, cute, and entertaining. I absolutely loved it and I can’t wait to go back and read Robin Benway’s previous books.

The voice in Also Known As is fantastic. Maggie had so much character and every sentence put on the page just felt right. She was so sheltered from a “normal” life and that made her first experiences with high school, boys, friends, etc. so hilarious and entertaining. And yet – strangely relatable. Maggie is the new girl, like most of us have been at one point or another, and even though she handled it way differently than most people, I still found myself being “Yeah, that’s the worst!”

I loved Roux. From her name to her attitude to her doorman to just everything about her. I may have liked her even more than Maggie.

While Jesse was a great character, I never really swooned over him. Him and Maggie just connected so well together and so quickly that I never really had a chance to swoon over him and anxiously flip the pages for their first kiss. I love them as a couple and their banter is amazing, but I just never felt the swoon factor in Also Known As.

And the story. I am a huge fan of spies and espionage and secrets and what not, so Also Known As was totally up my alley. It wasn’t heavy by any means, although there were some darker moments in Also Known As.

Guys, if you’re looking for a hilarious and entertaining book, I definitely recommend Also Known As by Robin Benway. While the story is awesome, I think the characters really make the story and the voice is just spot-on.

  2. I reviewed Also Known As today, too! Our thoughts are pretty much in accord. I loved Maggie – like you said, even though I can’t relate to being a teenage spy, she is still totally relatable.

And Roux – AMAZING! Definitely one of the best things about this story.

I felt the same way about Jesse Oliver. I liked him, but I wasn’t swooning. I definitely plan on reading more Benway!

  8. I think it’s awesome that we felt the same way about this book. The spy stuff is pretty darn cool, but I think my favorite parts are all the ones with Roux and Angelo, who are just AWESOME.
