Top Ten Tuesday: Summer TBR Pile

Posted by on Jun 18, 2013 in Book, Top Ten Tuesday | 16 comments

Each week, The Broke and Bookish host a Top Ten Tuesday based on a certain bookish topic. Other bloggers are able to participate and post their own top ten list based on the topic.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books on My Summer TBR Pile.

I look forward to making this seasonal post every time, for several reasons. I love sharing with you guys what I have coming up in my reading pile – and seeing what everyone else is planning to read, so I can add to my own pile, hah! But I also like making a list and I frequently check back to these kinds of posts to see what I’ve read, what I haven’t, etc.

These are books I’m planning to read in late June, July, and August. Lots mixed in between, but these are some of my must-reads!

Famous Last Words by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski {Goodreads | Amazon}

I loved Jennifer’s debut, How My Summer Went Up in Flames, so I can’t wait to read Famous Last Words! It sounds like a lot of fun. Hoping to read it ASAP!

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West {Goodreads | Amazon}

Uh, yes. I am all over The Distance Between Us! Again, I loved Kasie’s debut, Pivot Point, and I can’t wait to dive into this.

45 Pounds (More or Less) by K.A. Barson {Goodreads | Amazon}

I can’t wait for 45 Pounds (More or Less). It sounds like a phenomenal debut!

Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols {Goodreads | Amazon}

While I am a new Jennifer Echols fangirl, I am one nonetheless and I absolutely can’t wait to spend a hot summer day relaxing and reading Dirty Little Secret!

Starglass by Phoebe North {Goodreads | Amazon}

What a better way to escape the Florida heat than a trip somewhere else? Like outer space! I can’t wait to read Starglass on a day when I just want to get lost in another world.

The Theory of Everything by Kari Luna {Goodreads | Amazon}

Everything about The Theory of Everything is a ME book, so I can’t wait to finally dive into it!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon {Goodreads | Amazon}

I was already super excited for The Bone Season, and then Anna told me I would absolutely love it, so now I’m dying to read it right away!

The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson {Goodreads | Amazon}

I need The Bitter Kingdom in my life right away. I’ve been holding off, torturing myself, because I’m so sad for this series to end.

Just Like Fate by Suzanne Young and Cat Patrick {Goodreads | Amazon}

I have loved both of these ladies’ books, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with together! And Just Like Fate sounds like something I’m in the mood for right now.

All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill {Goodreads | Amazon}

I was totally excited for All Our Yesterdays before BEA – and then BEA happened and other people, like Cristin’s editor, talked about it there and now I am beyond excited to read it!

Top Ten Tuesday: Books Involving Travel

Posted by on Jun 4, 2013 in Book, Top Ten Tuesday | 17 comments

Each week, The Broke and Bookish host a Top Ten Tuesday based on a certain bookish topic. Other bloggers are able to participate and post their own top ten list based on the topic.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books Involving Travel.

I’ve actually done a whole post involving books about travel called Traveling Abroad Through Books. Traveling is one of my passions, you guys, and I love reading about it in books. You can view the whole post here if you’re interested.

But for the purpose of this week’s top ten Tuesday, I pulled a few of my favourite traveling books and some upcoming ones I’m very excited to read!

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

Paris! British boys! Anna and the French Kiss is such a fun book involving traveling abroad – one that I plan to reread many times!

Just One Day Gayle Forman {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

Just One Day was my first book by Gayle Forman and I loved it. Again, Paris!

Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

I love everything about Meant to Be, but especially how Lauren Morrill describes London. Spot-on – brilliantly done setting!

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

I want to re-read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight right now, actually. Such a fun and romantic travel book!

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

I don’t have the words to express my love of Wanderlove.

When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney {Goodreads | Amazon | My Review}

I just finished When You Were Here last week – it was amazing! And the way Daisy Whitney described Tokyo made me want to hop on a plane ASAP.

Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill {Goodreads | Amazon}

I absolutely cannot wait for Being Sloane Jacobs! I loved Lauren Morrill’s first book and this one takes place in Montreal! Yes, please!

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins {Goodreads | Amazon}

Yes, yes, yes! The release date on Isla and the Happily Ever After keeps putting pushed back, but c’est la vie! It will be worth the wait.

Just One Year by Gayle Forman {Goodreads | Amazon}

After the ending of Just One Day…man, I need this book!

Latitude Zero by Diana Renn {No Cover Yet, but read about it here)

Mystery! Ecuador! I loved Tokyo Heist, so I can’t wait to read Latitude Zero!

Top Ten Tuesday: Pick-Me-Ups

Posted by on May 7, 2013 in Book, Top Ten Tuesday | 18 comments

Each week, The Broke and Bookish host a Top Ten Tuesday based on a certain bookish topic. Other bloggers are able to participate and post their own top ten list based on the topic.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books When You Need Something Light & Fun. But I’m changing it up, you guys. Because light and fun to me implies pick me ups. And my pick-me-ups aren’t always light and fun. So I’m doing a variation on this topic – instead, I’m listing the top ten (fourteen) books & series I turn to when I need a pick me up.

I love the pants off of contemporaries. I love angsty ones, hilarious ones, romantic ones, ones that make me cry – travel, road trips, etc. I love contemporaries of all shapes and sizes. But there’s some that I always turn to when I’m in the need of a good pick-me-up.

1. 7 Clues to Winning You by Kristin Walker (Goodreads | Amazon) – Hands down, one of the most hilarious YA contemporaries I’ve ever read. So much fun, but also with a side of emotional that I really enjoyed. I love rereading 7 Clues to Winning You when I’m down.

2. Awkward by Marni Bates (Goodreads | Amazon) – Another perfectly hilarious YA contemporary. I have absolutely loved both of Marni Bates’ books so far and I highly recommend them for fun and relatable and awesome YA contemps.

3. Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill (Goodreads | Amazon) – I absolutely loved Lauren Morrill’s debut novel and while I haven’t had a chance to reread it yet (sadface), I know Meant to Be is going to be one of those books that I turn to time and time again when I need a smile.

4. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (Goodreads | Amazon) – Hi, yes. Do I really need to explain this choice? I love Stephanie Perkins’ books – they’re hilarious, but moving, and full of awesome characters.

5. Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard (Goodreads | Amazon) – I love Wanderlove to bits. It makes me feel all the feels and you really take a journey with Bria throughout the story. Wanderlove is one of those books where you notice new things every time you pick it up.

6. Anything by Sarah Ockler, but particularly Twenty Boy Summer (Goodreads | Amazon) – I have so much fangirl love for Sarah Ockler. I have read four books from her and every single one has been beautiful and stunning. I love to reread her books and cry and feel all the feels.

Okay, so while I love the pants off of contemporary, I think fantasy will always have the #1 spot in my heart.

7. Anything by Tamora Pierce, but particularly The Song of the Lioness series (Goodreads | Amazon) – Tamora Pierce is my favourite author ever. I love getting lost in her worlds and going on adventures with her characters. It’s the perfect way to take my mind off of all the things.

8. The Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell (Goodreads | Amazon) – The Cadet of Tildor is another one of those books where I love to get lost in the world. I haven’t had a chance to reread this one either, but I can’t wait to. And I definitely need another book from Alex Lidell ASAP!

9. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson (Goodreads | Amazon) – I love, love, love rae Carson’s books. AND HECTOR. GAH.

One of the things I like to do when I need a pick me up is binge. Either I binge-watch TV shows or I binge-read some of my favourite series. There’s nothing like getting absolutely sucked into a story and a world and being able to get days and weeks worth of enjoyment from it.

10. Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead (Goodreads | Amazon) – Ugh, yes! This series is perfect when I’m in need of a pick-me-up. It’s long and involving and has AMAZING characters and the emotional rollercoaster is awesome.

11. Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison (Goodreads | Amazon) – I absolutely love the Georgia Nicolson serdies. It’s just such a fun and hilarious and enjoyable series to get sucked into. I love Georgia, even when she’s absolutely bonkers. I’m feeling the urge to reread right now, actually!

12. The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot (Goodreads | Amazon) – The Princess Diaries series is classic for me. I’ve reread this series so many times that all my copies have fallen apart. I wish they would release bindups of this one!

13. The Mediator series by Meg Cabot (Goodreads | Amazon) – Freaking Jesse de Silva. I am always in need of a good Jesse de Silva dose in my life.

14. The Sweep series by Cate Tiernan (Goodreads | Amazon) – The Sweep series is an all-time favourite of mine. I’ve been through like three copies of each book because they keep falling apart and I have all the bindups and I just, gah. I love rereading this series – I started it when I was 11 and I can read it right now and fall in love all over again.

Posted by on Apr 2, 2013 in Book, Top Ten Tuesday, Vlog | 23 comments

Each week, The Broke and Bookish host a Top Ten Tuesday based on a certain bookish topic. Other bloggers are able to participate and post their own top ten list based on the topic.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Bookish Boyfriends. And for whatever reason, I decided to do a vlog! Because I like to ramble!

For those who don’t have the option to watch a video at the moment (or just don’t want to, whatevs!), here’s a list for your perusal!

1) George Cooper from the Alanna series by Tamora Pierce – Uh, yes. Yes yes yes to George Cooper. He is a thief and badass and he loves Alanna for who she is!

2) Hector from The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson – All the kissing scenes.

3) Robin Hood from Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen – He’s freaking ROBIN HOOD.

4) Aragorn from Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien – Kind of basing this off of the movie, but I have no shame. I love Viggo.

5) Hunter Niall from the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan – Hunter has been my bookish boyfriend since I was 11 years old. I love all things witchy!

6) Jesse de Silva from the Mediator series by Meg Cabot – He’s a Spanish cowboy ghost. Uh, yeah.

7) Michael Moscovitz from the Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot – If you even need to ask why, you need to go re/read this series.

8) Oliver from The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith – He’s British and cute and quirky and literate.

9) Dave the Laugh from the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison – I love Dave the Laugh because he can put up with Georgia, who is insane. But awesome.

10) Jesse Tuck from Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt – Totally and 100% based off the movie. I have read the book,b but I don’t remember it so…I love Jesse Tuck and his shaggy hair.

Honorable Mentions: Etienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss, Cricket Bell from Lola and the Boy Next Door, Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I HAD to Buy & Never Read

Posted by on Mar 19, 2013 in Book, Top Ten Tuesday | 39 comments

Each week, The Broke and Bookish host a Top Ten Tuesday based on a certain bookish topic. Other bloggers are able to participate and post their own top ten list based on the topic.

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is Books I HAD to Buy and Never Read. I must admit, this post was hard to do. The amount of books I’ve bought and have never read is kind of embarrassing. Really embarrassing, actually.

But I think it’s important that I own up to it and turn this post into a checklist! I will read all of these books before I go to BEA at the end of May. Maybe. Hopefully. That’s the plan! Anyway, here we go!

1) Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare – I am woefully behind in my Cassandra Clare reading. I think the third book in this series is coming out soon? I don’t even know. And I think I’m like two books behind in my other series. So I want to catch up, obviously.

Goodreads | Amazon

2) The Miseducation of Cameron Post by emily m. danforth – I heard AMAZING things about this 2012 debut when it came out last year so, of course, I preordered it. And then never read it! What the heck, past Tara?

Goodreads | Amazon

3) The Lucky Ones by Anna Godbersen – I love the heck out of this series and I was SO SO EXCITED when The Lucky Ones came out. And never read it. SIGH.

Goodreads | Amazon

4) Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard – I bought this BEFORE I read Wanderlove. I know, right? I was super stoked for it because it sounded amazing and Kirsten is amazing and then I never got around to it, sigh. Then I read Wanderlove and loved it like crazy, so now I need to read Like Mandarin.

Goodreads | Amazon

5) Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins – AH MY GOODNESS I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one. I COULDN’T WAIT. But then I had it in my hands and I was like “I DON’T WANT THIS SERIES TO END!” so I never read it. But the spin-off is coming out soon and I think it’s finally time to end the series.

Goodreads | Amazon

6) Mastiff by Tamora Pierce – Hello favourite author EVER. While this is not my favourite series by her, I have very much enjoyed the past books and I really need to read this one! But I’ve been putting it off ever since I got it because I really want to reread the first two books to refresh. Like I have the time for that.

Goodreads | Amazon

7) A Million Suns by Beth Revis – I have no idea why I haven’t read A Million Suns. Honestly. I have a feeling it’s going to rip my heart out, though, and maybe I’m kind of scared.

Goodreads | Amazon

8) Insurgent by Veronica Roth – Okay, I think I’m most embarrassed about this one, honestly. I loved Divergent – I was obsessed with it – and I watched in envy as the early bloggers got their hands on it and read away. And then when the day finally came, when my preorder finally arrived…I never read it. SIGH.

Goodreads | Amazon

9) Other Words for Love by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal – I think this one came out in 2011? AGES AGO. Either way, the author is super nice and I was super excited and YAY debuts and I loved the cover! Preordered it, never read it.

Goodreads | Amazon

10) Rebel Heart by Moira Young – WHAT THE WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME. Blood Red Road is one of my favourite books of all time. I guess this is another “I’m scared it won’t be as good so I’ll never read it!” books.

Goodreads | Amazon

Honorable Mentions: Hourglass by Myra McEntire, Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers, Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton
