The Teen Book SceneJoy Delamere is suffocating…
From asthma, which has nearly claimed her life. From her parents, who will do anything to keep that from happening. From delectably dangerous Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out.
Joy can take his words – tender words, cruel words – until the night they go too far.
Now, Joy will leave everything behind to find the one who has offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. She will become someone else. She will learn to survive. She will breathe… if only she can get to Creed before it’s too late.
Set against the gritty backdrop of Seattle’s streets and a cast of characters with secrets of their own, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the subtleties of abuse, the meaning of love, and how far a girl will go to discover her own strength. – Goodreads
Don’t Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala is a very intense and moving read.
I’ve never read anything like Don’t Breathe a Word before, in regards to the story. I mean, I’ve volunteered at a homeless shelter, okay? But oh my god, after reading Don’t Breathe a Word, I just can’t imagine ever going through what Joy went through, especially not willingly. And the situation that led her to make her choice just broke me.
I loved every single character in Don’t Breathe a Word. I loved Joy and how strong she had to be, and CREED. He was freaking amazing – definitely a top fictional crush. And the other homeless kids that hung out with them…I just thought everyone was so dimensional for secondary characters and I really enjoyed reading their moments and hearing their back story.
I waffle back and forth on the ending of Don’t Breathe a Word. Sometimes I think it was almost too unrealistic for the situation, but other times I’m glad there was so much hope at the end.
Either way, I absolutely loved Don’t Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala. It’s a brilliantly done and emotional book that makes me want to go help people as much as I can. If it sounds like a book you’d like, I definitely recommend picking it up or giving it a shot.

I went back and forth on the ending as well, but finally decided that I liked the element of hope, even though it seemed a bit unrealistic for me.

I don’t usually read realistic fiction. But I’m super excited about this.
